9 Hurt in Yonkers Apartment Fire

At least nine people, including eight firefighters, were hurt in a fire that swept through a apartment building in Yonkers early Wednesday, authorities say.

Between 30 and 45 firefighters were called to the blaze at the building on Park Avenue, according to fire officials.

Smoke filled the stairwells of the building and flames roared from windows, prompting residents to race down fire escapes, a fire official said.

“Basically every fire escape on the building, there was someone coming down,” Assistant Fire Chief Brian Travers said.

It took about 40 minutes to get the fire under control, mainly because of wind conditions and the building’s age.

Fire was “traveling through all these nooks and crannies,” Travers said.

None of the firefighters who were hurt had serious injuries. A resident was also treated for minor injuries.

Officials said two families were displaced by the blaze.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, although smoking is being looked at as a possibility.
