7 People Injured in 3-Vehicle Pileup on New England Thruway; Traffic Snarled for Hours

Seven people were injured and traffic was backed up for hours after three vehicles collided on the New England Thruway in the Bronx early Sunday morning, police said.

The accident happened shortly after midnight in Eastchester, when a dark blue passenger van was trying to merge off of the New England Thruway at Exit 14 near Conner Street. While trying to exit, the van crashed into a box truck, sending the box truck careening into a third truck, according to police.

Four of the five passengers were ejected from the van on impact, police said. The fifth passenger was also injured, as were two passengers in the box truck. The seven victims were taken to Jacobi or St. Barnabas hospital. All of them were in stable condition Sunday morning and expected to survive.

The accident backed up traffic on the New England Thruway for hours. The northbound side reopened around 4:30 a.m. and the southbound side reopened sometime around 5:30 a.m.
