Airbnb Blasts City Council's ‘Freddy Krueger' Bill for Steep Fines

Airbnb has sent a letter to the New York City Council blasting a bill that would charge homeowners who use home-sharing sites with steep fines.

The company says it's a "bad policy" that could bankrupt New Yorkers.

The Daily News says the company's head of public policy sent the letter Wednesday, a week before the Housing and Buildings Committee holds a hearing on the bill.

Christopher Lehane, Airbnb's global head of public policy, called it the "Freddy Krueger" of bills.

Councilman Jumaane Williams concedes the $50,000 maximum fine might be a little steep, but says it wouldn't be levied against the occasional Airbnb user.

He and Councilwoman Helen Rosenthal say it's targeted at landlords who illegally rent out regulated apartments.
