12 Injured in High-Rise Apartment Building Fire: FDNY

Twelve people were injured, five of them seriously, in a fire at an apartment building in Harlem Monday night, the FDNY said.

The fire started sometime before 10:20 p.m. in a ninth floor compactor chute of the 28-story apartment building near St. Nicholas Avenue and West 131st Street.

Twelve people were injured in the fire. Five of them were listed in serious condition at an area hospital. The other seven, including a firefighter, suffered minor injuries.

At least three of the patients were at Harlem Hospital early Tuesday morning.

The fire was brought under control just before midnight.
