5-Year-Old Among 2 Dead After SUV Crashes Into Box Truck on GWB

Two people, including a 5-year-old child, were killed and three other people were injured when an SUV collided with a box truck on the George Washington Bridge on Wednesday night, fire officials said.

The GMC Acadia with New Jersey plates crashed into the rear of the truck on the New York City-bound upper level of the bridge around 10 p.m., officials said.

One of the victims had to be extricated from a vehicle.

Five people who were in the SUV were taken to Columbia Presbyterian Hospital. The 5-year-old and a man in his 30s died. Officials have not released the names of the two people who died.

Three other passengers, including a 1-year-old child, a woman in her 30s and a woman in her 70s, had minor injuries.

The crash backed up traffic on the bridge late Wednesday night. Delays of 60-to-90 minutes were reported on the bridge shortly after 11 p.m. All lanes of the upper level eastbound and one lane of the upper level westbound were closed for several hours. The bridge completely reopened around 2:30 Thursday morning.
