Dolphin Rescued from Sandbar off Oak Beach

The Risso's dolphin is being treated for dehydration and gastric bleeding

A 600-pound adult female dolphin has been rescued off Long Island's south shore.

The Risso's dolphin is receiving medical treatment at the Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Preservation. It was rescued from a sandbar just south of Oak Beach on Thursday afternoon.

Rescuers from the Riverhead Foundation were assisted by Coast Guard officials in making the rescue.

Rescue Program Director Kimberly Durham says the dolphin will be closely monitored. It is being treated for dehydration and well as gastric bleeding.

This animal is the second Risso's dolphin recovered by the Riverhead Foundation in two weeks, but the adult female recovered earlier in the Hudson River upstate died of starvation.
