Man, 19, Fatally Stabbed Girlfriend's Ex on the Upper East Side: Police

A man has been charged in the fatal stabbing of his girlfriend's ex on the Upper East Side Tuesday morning, authorities said.

Gustavo Rodriguez, 19, is facing murder, assault and weapons charges in the stabbing death of Xavier Olivares on the Upper East Side at about 1 a.m.

Authorities say that Olivares, 22, got in an argument with Rodriguez on East 94th Street. At some point, Rodriguez allegedly stabbed Oliveres several times in the chest.

Police said that Olivares used to date the 19-year-old suspect's girlfriend and confronted his ex and Rodriguez before the stabbing.

After the stabbing someone took Olivares, from the Bronx, to Metropolitan Hospital in critical condition. He died from his injuries sometime after 3 a.m.

Rodriguez was arrested Tuesday afternoon. Attorney information for the man wasn't immediately available.

He said nothing to reporters as he was led from a police station.

Rodriguez's father said on Tuesday that "I thought it was a joke but it's not."

Olivares' neighbor Louis Monte told NBC 4 New York in Spanish that he grew up with his son, "hung out with all the kids around here, everybody liked him."

The stabbing forced a construction site to shut down for the day as police searched for the murder weapon.
