NY Man Charged in Fatal Crash That Killed German Au Pair on Long Island: DA

A Long Island man has been indicted on a slew of charges in the death of a German au pair killed in a fatal crash in Southampton, prosecutors say.

Jacob Alegria pleaded not guilty to man slaughter, assault, reckless endangerment and reckless driving charges Wednesday morning, Suffolk County District Attorney Thomas Spota said. Bail was set at $100,000 cash or $200,000 bond.

The 27-year-old allegedly smashed his Lexus into an SUV occupied by 26-year-old Luisa Keszler and 20-year-old Charlotte Meyer on Hill Street in February, authorities said. The accident sent the SUV barreling into a tree.

Keszler sustained serious injuries and is still recovering. Meyer was killed; she had arrived in the U.S. to work as an au pair just days earlier, according to prosecutors.

Multiple witnesses told authorities Alegria allegedly crossed the double yellow lines into incoming traffic to overtake slower vehicles just before the head-on collision, Spota said.

Alegria was allegedly traveling at 78 mph, more than three times the 25 mph speed limit, prosecutors said.
