Officer Fires Shots at Suspects after Getaway Car Hits His Partner: Authorities

A police officer was hit by a car that sped away as he questioned the occupants about an attempted theft on Long Island early Wednesday, prompting his partner to fire three shots at the vehicle, authorities say.

The two Suffolk County officers were responding to a store clerk's report about an attempted theft at a 76 Gas Station on Route 112 in Medford. As the officers were leaving the scene, a Dodge Charger described by the clerk as the suspect's car pulled into the gas station.

While the officers were speaking to the suspects, the car pulled away, striking an officer and their patrol car, investigators said.

The officer's partner fired three shots at the car. A bullet shattered a window, and flying glass hit one of the passengers.

The car was tracked down by other officers on Flores Lane in Middle Island. The driver, Sheldon Davis, 42, of Coram, was arrested on a drunk driving charge and a second suspect was also taken into custody

A third passenger fled and is still on the lam, authorities say.

The officer was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

There was no indication that Davis had obtained a lawyer who cold comment on the charges.
