Woman in Suicide Case Dies; Husband Could Face Additional Charges

Authorities say a Hudson Valley man could face new charges because his wife has died three days after he attempted to help her commit suicide inside their home.

Police in the city of Kingston tell local media that 59-year-old Catherine Egan died Friday at Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx, where she had been in critical condition.

Officers found her on the floor of her Kingston home last Tuesday. Officials say her husband, 62-year-old Paul Egan, had disconnected an exhaust pipe from a basement steam boiler, causing carbon monoxide to render her unconscious.

He was later charged with promoting a suicide attempt. Police and the Ulster County district attorney are considering additional charges.

Egan, a retired Marist College professor, is free on bail. Information on his attorney wasn't immediately available.
