Hudson PCB Cleanup Review to Be Discussed This Week

The federal Environmental Protection Agency is encouraging the public to attend a discussion this week about the recent cleanup of the upper Hudson River.

The EPA is now assessing the six-year dredging project and is holding a workshop about its review process Thursday in Saratoga Springs.

The review comes a year after General Electric finished dredging a 40-mile stretch of the river for PCBs as part of a federal Superfund project.

The EPA's year-long review will include data collected this spring and summer from fish, water and sediment.

The EPA plans to hold several more workshops with the Hudson River Community Advisory Group as the review process proceeds.

Until 1977, GE plants discharged into the river more than 1 million pounds of polychlorinated biphenyls, which are considered a probable carcinogen.
