Cuomo Backs Lifting Time Limit on Suing Child Molesters

Gov. Cuomo says he supports legislation to lift New York's statute of limitations on suing child molesters, including a one-year window when victims could sue for old incidents.

Cuomo said Tuesday that window needs to protect the legal rights of both the accused and the accuser and not encourage frivolous lawsuits.

He also supports treating public and private entities the same under the law.

Victims now have until they turn 23 to file lawsuits, but supporters say it can take years before victims step forward.

The lookback provision faces opposition from the Catholic Church and other institutions rocked by abuse scandals.

The New York Senate's majority Republicans on Monday blocked Democrats from using a procedural maneuver to bring that bill to a vote.
