Six people were rescued from a smoke-filled Yonkers apartment building after a fast-moving fire tore through multiple floors of the structure and trapped them inside.

The fire started around 1:45 a.m. Wednesday on the second floor of the McLean Avenue building, Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano said. Flames quickly spread to the third floor, sending smoke rushing out the building's windows.

Those who escaped said smoke was filling the hallways and flames were consuming a stairwell.

Firefighters ran into the thick smoke and rescued six people. Two of them had to be carried out and at least one person was seen climbing down a fire escape.

One person was critically injured in the blaze. He or she was taken to Jacobi Medical Center and appeared to be recovering as of 5:30 a.m., an assistant fire chief said.

Emergency responders were seen rushing several people by on stretchers and another person was being tended to as she was lying on a sidewalk. Officials said several people suffered burns.

About a dozen firefighters also suffered minor injuries.

The fire was brought under control sometime before 4:30 a.m. Temporary shelters were set up for those displaced by the fire.

Fire officials are investigating the cause of the blaze.
