N.J. Woman Charged With Beating, Abandoning Baby

New Jersey mother has been charged with assaulting and endangering her 1-month-old baby, who was found abandoned outside Weehawken High School.

A court-appointed lawyer for 37-year-old Tamara Reyes of Weehawken entered a not guilty plea for her Wednesday in a Jersey City court. Reyes is charged with aggravated assault, endangering the welfare of a child and child abuse. She is in custody and bail has not been set.

Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio says Reyes' 1-month-old daughter was found June 10 face-down on a sidewalk in front of the school and not on the school steps as originally reported.

Reyes was stopped nearby by police for driving erratically. DeFazio says the baby had a skull fracture and other injuries that could be consistent with being thrown from a car. She remains hospitalized.
