7 Hurt When Alleged Drunk Driver Crashes into NJ Transit Bus: Officials

Several people were hurt when an allegedly drunk driver crashed into a New Jersey Transit bus and other vehicles in Newark Thursday morning, police say.

Newark police said the 36-year-old driver, Juan Hernandez Jr., was spotted by an officer speeding in his car before he crashed into the bus and other vehicles near Bloomfield and Summer avenues at about 7:30 a.m.

There were about 20 people aboard the No. 11 bus, which was headed to Willowbrook mall at the time of the crash.

NJ Transit officials said that five passengers, the bus driver and a motorist in another vehicle had minor injuries. All were taken to local hospitals for treatment.

Hernandez and another person in the car tried to run away after the crash, but Hernandez was immediately captured. He's been charged with DWI, leaving the scene of an accident and other offenses.

Attorney information wasn't immediately clear.

The other person who fled the scene is still being sought by police.
