NJ Teacher's Aide Accused of Attacking a Student

A teacher’s aide at a private special education school in New Jersey has been arrested for allegedly attacking a student, police said.

Jose D. Garrido, 60, was taken into custody Thursday after a complaint that he attacked a student at YCS George Washington School at 386 Hudson Street in Hackensack. Garrido works as a teacher’s aide at the school, which serves K-12 students with cognitive disabilities and other conditions.

Hackensack Police learned of the alleged attack from the parent of the student, and notified the Special Victims Unit.

The nature of the attack is unclear, but Garrido has been charged with one count of endangering the welfare of a child and one count of simple assault.

Garrido’s bail was set at $20,000 with a 10 percent option. He is currently being held at the Bergen County Jail. He is scheduled to be arraigned Monday morning.

Richard Mingoia, the CEO of YCS, wasn’t immediately available for comment.
