Man in Violent New Jersey Crash Was Shot in Head, Prosecutors Say

A car crashed through a telephone pole and into a tree in north Jersey on Thursday morning, and prosecutors say one of the five people in the vehicle had been shot in the head. 

The man who had been shot survived and was undergoing surgery Thursday following the 2:30 a.m. crash near Franklin Avenue and Mill Street in Belleville.

Prosecutors said the other four people in the Pontiac that crashed were taken to area hospitals. Their conditions were unknown. 

Officials say one vehicle had followed the Pontiac from Newark to Belleville just prior to the crash and shooting. 

The stretch of Franklin Avenue was cordoned off as authorities investigated.
