An independent candidate running for mayor of a South Jersey town was busted for allegedly selling marijuana to an undercover police officer, authorities said.

Thomas Litwin is accused of selling marijuana to an undercover police officer in Stafford Township last Friday, police said.

Township police said Litwin was charged with marijuana distribution to an undercover officer, possession of more than 50 grams of marijuana, possession of synthetic cannaboids and possession of drug paraphernalia, according to the Asbury Park Press. Bail was set at $50,000 but Litwin remained in custody at the Ocean County Jail in Toms River.

The Ocean County Prosecutor's Office did not have information about if Litwin had an attorney.

The 43-year-old was challenging Republican Mayor John Spodofora in the November election. The mayor tells the Asbury Park Press he was appalled by the arrest.

The other independent candidate in the race is Paul Marchal.  The last day for an independent candidates to remove their name from is Sept. 7, according to the Press.
