Police Probe Attempted Murder-Suicide in Washington Heights

The suspect is listed in critical condition at a local hospital after shooting himself in the head, police say

Police are investigating an attempted murder-suicide in Washington Heights.

The NYPD says a 29-year-old man allegedly shot and killed a woman, tried to flee and, when confronted by police outside the building, retreated and shot himself in the head.

The suspect was taken to the hospital in critical condition. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

The deadly confrontation happened early Wednesday in an apartment on Audubon Avenue.
Police say the suspect allegedly shot the 26-year-old victim in the head after a heated argument. The man attempted to flee, but was confronted by police in the building's lobby, authorities say.

The suspect allegedly began firing on the officers and retreated into the building where police say he used his gun to shoot himself.

No other injuries were reported.

Police haven't released the identities of the suspect or the victim. Residents say they were dating and often got into arguments in public.

The investigation is ongoing.
