Mt. Vernon Woman Accused of Murdering Newborn: Police

Police searched Kadian Gilzeane's home and found a newborn baby boy wrapped in plastic

A 27-year-old woman is accused of murdering her newborn baby and trying to tell doctors she had a miscarriage.

Police said Kadian Gilzeane walked into a Mt. Vernon hospital on Aug. 3, saying she had a miscarriage. Upon examination doctors determined she had in fact given birth.

Police searched her home and found a newborn baby boy wrapped in plastic. An autopsy determined that the baby was alive when born, police said.

Gilzeane was arraigned on murder charges Thursday. She has no prior criminal history and is a single mother with a 5-year-old disabled girl, who is now with Child Protective Services.

"She didn't display and signs of stress," said Gilzeane's neighbor James Wilson. "This all took us by quite a surprise."

Wilson said he regularly saw Gilzeane with her daughter, who uses a motorized wheelchair.

"Seemed like she took care of her daughter very well," Wilson said.

Gilzeane has not revealed a reason for allegedly killing her newborn, police said.

"It's an innocent child that never had a chance," said Mt. Vernon Police Captain Edward Adinaro.
