Mount Vernon Police Dog Dies of Cancer

The only on-duty police dog in Mount Vernon has died of cancer.

Sito, a German shepherd, was 10.

The Journal News reports that Sito had been with the force for eight years.

Officer Eugene Wilsea is the partner of Sito's handler. He says Sito was instrumental in the 2007 arrest of a suspect who was convicted of murder. The dog uncovered 50 pounds of marijuana and other drugs in his time with the force.

Mount Vernon's other K-9 is not on duty because the handler is out on disability.

Wilsea says Sito's handler is devastated.

The K9 will be honored at a memorial service on Jan. 7.
