Mount Vernon Mayor Pleads Guilty to Tax Evasion Charges

The mayor of Mount Vernon pleaded guilty to federal tax charges.

Ernest D. Davis entered the plea Tuesday in White Plains. The 76-year-old mayor pleaded guilty to two counts of willfully failing to file federal income tax returns.

He faces a maximum of two years in prison at a sentencing scheduled for Jan. 26.

As part of his plea, Davis admitted failing to disclose to the Internal Revenue Service that he sold a Mount Vernon building in 2003 that he had purchased in 1988.

Authorities say he also admitted that he failed to file a federal income tax return for 2011, when he earned about $106,000.

And court papers say he failed to report rental income for a 10-year period ending in 2012.
