Motorist Slows to Avoid Accident, Killed by Driver Charged With DWI

A motorist who slowed to avoid an accident scene on the Long island Expressway was killed early Saturday morning when his car was truck by a vehicle driven by what police said was an intoxicated driver.

George Ragotte, 21, of Ronkonkoma, was extracted from his 1992 BMW sedan after the 2:13 a.m. crash and taken to Nassau University Medical Center where he died at 6 a.m., Nassau County police said.

Ragotte had slowed his car to avoid the wreckage of two cars that had sideswiped each other on the expressway east of Sunnyside Boulevard, investigators said. Ragotte's care was struck by a 2012 BMW sedan driven by Raj Jadeja, 34, of Brooklyn.

Jadeja was charged with Driving While Intoxicated, second-degree manslaughter, vehicular manslaughter and second-degree reckless driving, police said.

Jadeja was taken to a local hospital for treatment of his injuries. No information was available about his condition or whether he had obtained a lawyer who could comment on the charges.
