Motorcyclist Hospitalized After Crashing into Police Car on L.I.E.

A motorcyclist crashed into a police car as the officer was trying to make a U-turn on the Long Island Expressway Wednesday afternoon, and is hospitalized with a serious head injury, officials say.

A marked Suffolk County Police Motor Carrier Safety vehicle was trying to turn on the westbound L.I.E. at an area designated for emergency vehicles, near exit 51 in Dix Hills, according to police. That's when the motorcyclist crashed into the back of the vehicle.

The motorcycle operator was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital by helictoper with a serious head injury, police said.

The officer was taken to Huntington Hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

The highway was shut down in the area as police investigated the accident. It has since been reopened but there were residual delays into the evening rush hour.
