Mother, Son Found Dead in NJ Murder-Suicide: Police

The pair was found by a family friend Saturday.

A mother and her grown son were found dead in their Clifton, N.J. home Saturday in an apparent murder-suicide, according to police.

Police say a family friend found the bodies of Cheryl Regazzi, 53, and Robert Regazzi, 20, of 17 Gillies St. at about 4:30 p.m. Saturday.

Prosecutors say Robert Regazzi apparently shot his mother to death before he fatally overdosed on some type of narcotic drug.

It's unclear when the shooting and overdose happened, though Cheryl Regazzi was last seen by neighbors putting out garbage on Thanksgiving Day.

Several guns were removed from the home after the bodies were discovered. It's unclear what led up to the shooting.

Officials say Cheryl Regazzi was shot once, but further details on her death were not immediately disclosed. And while they believe her son purposely overdosed, the drug he took won't be known until toxicology test are completed, a process that could take several weeks.

The two lived together in the home, and neighbors said they appeared close and were often seen taking walks together in the neighborhood with their dog.

"It's a shame," said James Kirwin, a neighbor. "He really was a nice person. Why that happened that way, I don't know."

Police would not speculate on a cause and were continuing to investigate Sunday.
