Mom, Sister Arrested in Alleged Sex Abuser's Murder-for-Hire Plot

Prosecutors say Daniel Miller tried to hire someone to killed the 17-year-old victim he allegedly assaulted to prevent him from testifying

The mother and sister of a 45-year-old Long Island man previously charged with sexually abusing a teenage employee have both been charged in connection with his alleged plot to kill the victim to prevent him from testifying, authorities said.

Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice said that Daniel Miller, the owner of an Inwood Santeria religious supplies store incarcerated in the Nassau County Correctional Center since his April 19 arrest, met with a confidential source to arrange to have the sexual abuse victim killed. Miller allegedly instructed the source to go to Miller’s home for more information.

When the source arrived at Miller’s home, he allegedly met with Miller’s sister and mother, who are accused of providing him with documents containing the intended victim’s personal information, Rice said. After the source received the information, he went back to the jail to meet Miller, she said.

During that jail meeting, Miller allegedly offered to pay the source $15,000 to arrange the killing by making it look like a cell phone robbery. He allegedly told the source that his mother, a secretary at Lawrence High School, had stolen the personal records of the intended victim from the school.

Mary Miller, 80,  and Ann Miller, 59, both of Inwood, were arrested Tuesday for their alleged roles in the murder-for-hire plot Daniel Miller is accused of orchestrating, authorities said. Mary Miller, the suspect's mother, was charged with official misconduct and faces up to a year if convicted. Ann Miller, his sister, is charged with conspiracy and witness tampering. She also faces up to a year in jail if convicted. Both women received desk appearance tickets and are due back in court Aug. 2. Information on attorneys wasn't available.

Miller was charged with criminal sexual act, among other crimes, for allegedly drugging and abusing the teenage employee in April. Those charges are currently pending, and he faces up to 25 years in prison if convicted. He was arraigned last week on conspiracy and criminal solicitation charges in connection with the alleged plot and faces up to 25 years in prison if convicted.

“Despite the devastating trauma the victim was put through at the hands of this defendant, Daniel Miller decided that it still wasn’t enough,” Rice said. “When murder-for-hire plots come to light, it is essential that law enforcement move quickly to ensure the safety of the intended victim and the arrest of the person pulling the strings."
