Kalynn Moore's attorney, Michael Anise, says a nurse cleaned up the baby, dressed him in a hat and blanket and gave the baby to the mom to hold.

Is it a medical tragedy or a hospital cover-up?

That's what investigators are trying to figure out as they search for the tiny body of Bashere Davon Moyd Jr.

Officials at Jersey City's Christ Hospital said the baby was stillborn on Dec. 21 and his body was placed in the hospital morgue. But the baby's mother, Kalynn Moore, said the boy was born alive and died after doctors worked to stabilize him for 20 minutes.

"Tell me the truth; what happened to my baby?" Moore asked at a news conference Tuesday, flanked by her attorney, Michael Anise. "It's like, really heartbreaking."

Anise said a nurse cleaned up the baby, dressed him in a hat and blanket and gave the baby to the mom to hold, just long enough for a picture to be taken, Moore's only tangible memory of her baby.

But when funeral-home workers came to pick up the boy's body days later, it was nowhere to be found, perhaps accidentally thrown in the trash. That trash is no longer at the hospital, prompting investigators to search garbage dumps in New Jersey, Pennsylvania and even Kentucky, and ask if the disposal was an honest accident or a deliberate act to cover up a medical mistake.

  • Blake'sMom Friday, Jan 16 at 1:46 AM FLAG COMMENT This is horrific! My heart goes out to this family. My son was stillborn almost 2 years ago several days before his due date. He weighed over 8 pounds. There are no words to describe the devastating heartbreak. I am amazed how every article states New Jersey's law on stillbirth. That is the law in every state. Since my son never took a breath I do not receive a live birth certificate. However, we were issued a death ce ... MORE >
  • Iris Wednesday, Jan 14 at 10:16 AM FLAG COMMENT Unbelievable, I think abortion has desesitized people about baby death. Babies are losing their value of life in society, how is it that society will bury their dog for $4,000 dollars but we are frown upon as moms when we want to bury our stilllborn. We have gotten to know these babies in our womb and we have learned to see behond today to a future with this baby in it. We as mothers prepare for the arrival with anticipatio ... MORE >

  • Anonymous Friday, Jan 9 at 2:49 PM FLAG COMMENT I just recently had a stillborn, and it is devastating. She could definitely still be in shock, and cant even fathom the thought of not only her newborn dying, but not even having a body. This is so terrible. I can only imagine how she feels. My heart goes out to anyone who has to go through this.
  • Nana from PA Friday, Jan 9 at 1:29 PM FLAG COMMENT To have called off the search in KY on 1/9/09 is still UNTHINKABLE. My heart goes out the the family and also the lawmakers of NJ for thinking a fetus is NOT a being. May God give comfort for those who are effective with this case, whether reading about it, or involved personally with it. There is a new angel, and he is held in the arms of Our Lord today.
