Search for Missing New Jersey Swimmer Suspended

A man trying to swim in the Atlantic Ocean for the first time went missing off Island Beach State Park on Friday, prompting a long but unsuccessful search for him.

The 25-year-old man, Nicholas Guilhote, went missing while swimming off the park in Ocean County shortly before noon Friday. Police said it was his first time trying to swim in the ocean.

Guilhote, of France, was wearing red shorts.

The Coast Guard searched for him on Friday for six hours. It said it covered more than 17 square miles with a 25-foot response boat and a 47-foot motor life boat from its Barnegat Light station and an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter from its Atlantic City air station.

Numerous local responders participated in the search.

The Coast Guard suspended its search for Guilhote on Friday evening and might not resume Saturday, but local agencies planned to keep looking for him.
