Military Flare Washes Ashore on Long Island Beach

A military-grade marker flare washed up on the beach at Smith Point County Park on Sunday, authorities said.

Someone flagged park officials when he noticed the strange object wash ashore at Smith Point County Park, which is located east of Fire Island.

Emergency Service officers buried the two-foot flare in the sand and detonated it at the scene, Suffolk police said.

The area was evacuated and has since reopened.
