A driver died in a fiery fruit truck crash on the New Jersey Turnpike that sent the tractor-trailer flying off an overpass and onto the pavement below, authorities say.

The driver lost control around 6:30 p.m. and plunged off the overpass, then caught fire, New Jersey State Police said on Twitter.

The refrigerated fruit truck crashed with another vehicle, then plunged from the overpass above onto the ground below, the Carteret Fire Department said. Fire officials say it was totally consumed with flames by the time they arrived.

Troopers warned of delays and said there were closures due to the investigation. The road had reopened by 11 p.m.
