Marine from Long Island Killed in Afghanistan

A Marine killed earlier this week while serving in Afghanistan has been identified as a young man from Long Island.

Lance Cpl. Leopold Damas of Floral Park died on Aug. 17. The 26-year-old was part of Operation Enduring Freedom and was killed while supporting combat operations in Helmand province.

No specific cause of death was given.

Damas was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, based out of Camp Lejeune, N.C.
