Utility crews are on the scene of two manhole fires in Chelsea that have caused power outages in the area.
A Con Ed spokesman said two manholes exploded at about 2:30 p.m. near 55 West 17th St., at Sixth Avenue.
Witnesses said they heard a loud boom on 17th Street.
"I was sitting at the desk over here, and just 'boom,' explosion, smoke billowing out," said one man who works in the area. "People running. It was wild."
The manhole fires caused a power outage on 15th Street between Sixth and Seventh avenues.
The explosion caused some damage in the area. There were reports of shattered windows.
Ten people were taken out of a nearby building by firefighters, authorities say. There were no injuries.
