Family-Owned NYC Guitar Store Where Beatles Shopped is For Sale

A family guitar shop on Staten Island is on the market, and its owners hope it will land in the caring hands of someone just as passionate about music.

Eric Jay and his sister Alison have run the Mandolin Brothers store since their father Stan Jay, who founded the store, died last year. But the family can't keep it up, so they're looking to sell.

"I would very much like to see the business go on, and I'm very positive that the rest of the world would like to see us remain in some way in existence," said Jay.

Stan Jay welcomed anyone into his store: "He would invite them in and tell them to play literally anything in the place," his son said. "That means take the $300 guitar off the wall and strum away, or go into the high-end room and play a guitar that costs tens of thousands of dollars."

The Beatles' George Harrison and Paul McCartney were among the hundreds of musicians who shopped with Mandolin Brothers. There was also the telecaster for Bruce Springsteem, to Neil Young and Joni Mitchell.

"Regular old Bob or Robert, or Bob Dylan -- you get the same treatment here," said Eric Jay.

The Jays are hoping to find a buyer who's in tune with the history of the place.

"People think this is an iconic institution, a mecca, and people don't want the store to go away," said Alison Jay.
