Police in New Jersey are searching for a Newark man who allegedly beat and tried to sexually assault a female Rutgers student in New Brunswick last week.
Michael P. Knight, 37, allegedly followed the woman to College Avenue near Seminary Place on the New Brunswick campus at about 3:30 a.m. on May 4, police said.
He then hit her on the head, beat her and dragged her to the side of a building where he tried to sexually assault her, authorities said.
A group of passersby saw the scuffle and intervened, police said.
One of the good Samaritans chased after Knight, who said he had a gun and threatened to shoot, police said.
Crime Stoppers of Middlesex County have issued a reward for information leading to Knight’s arrest, authorities said.
Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-939-9600.
