Man Struck and Killed by NJ Transit Train

NJ Transit does not know why man was on the tracks.

New Jersey Transit says one of its trains struck and killed a man who was on the tracks near a station in northern New Jersey.

The accident occurred around 6 a.m. Sunday, just west of the North Elizabeth station. Authorities were trying to determine the man's identity and why he was on the tracks.

NJ Transit spokeswoman Courtney Carroll says the Northeast Corridor 7813 train had departed from New York City and was headed to Trenton when the accident occurred. It wasn't immediately known how many people were on the train at the time, but no other injuries were reported.

The accident briefly delayed westbound service on the Northeast Corridor and North Jersey Coast lines.
