New task forces aim to stop the upward trend of domestic violence cases across the state.

Newark police say a man fleeing the scene of a traffic accident stole and crashed two vehicles, including a Port Authority Police cruiser, before being taken into custody.

The unidentified suspect was involved in a two-car crash on Route 1&9 near Newark Liberty International Airport shortly before 5 p.m. Monday.

As Port Authority Police responded, the man exited his car and jumped into the Port Authority cruiser, striking an officer as he sped away.

Minutes later he wrecked the cruiser and stole a white pickup truck, which he flipped over near Stockton and Delancey streets in Newark.

He was taken to University Hospital in Newark. There was no immediate word on his condition nor on the condition of the injured officer.
