Thief Steals Car With Boy in Backseat

A car thief in Queens stole a vehicle with a 9-year-old boy sitting in the backseat, police said Friday.

The young boy was unharmed, police said.

According to police, the child's father had ducked into a bodega at the corner of109th Avenue and Van Wyck State Road around 7:40 a.m.  He had left the car parked and running and the boy was waiting in the backseat.

That's when a man jumped in the front seat of the idling car and sped away, police said.

A witness told police that the boy's father frantically called the cell phone in the car and the thief answered.  The carjacker gave the phone to the boy and told the child to give his location to his father and police.

Witness Evette Calderon told NBCNewYork she saw the incident.  "It was a frightening situation, I'm sure, for the young kid."

The car and boy were discovered about five miles away, near 231st Street and Sunrise Highway in Laurelton.

The suspect is still being sought, police said.
