Man Stabbed Friend 20 Times During Fight on Hudson Valley Street

A man was stabbed 20 times during a fight with his friend on a Hudson Valley street, state police said Thursday.

Jonathan Rizzo, 20, of Cornwall-on-Hudson in Orange County was charged with first-degree assault, troopers said.

Police say Rizzo got into a fight with an acquaintance early Wednesday morning on Idlewild Avenue in the village of Cornwall-on-Hudson. Troopers say Rizzo repeatedly stabbed the 21-year-old man in the head and torso.

"How the victim didn't die is a miracle," said Maj. Joseph Tripodo.

Despite his injuries, the victim was able to walk to the nearby home of another friend and a call was made to 911.

"I hear the scream outside and I look from the window and I said, 'There is something big happening here,'" said neighbor Mai Fayyad.

The victim suffered a fractured right hand and skull. He was treated at St. Luke's Hospital in Cornwall and expected to survive, troopers said.

The Cornwall-on-Hudson Police Department reached out to the New York State Police to assist in the investigation because the small department doesn't usually handle such violent crimes.

"Something of this magnitude stands out," said Cornwall-on-Hudson Chief Steven Dickson.

Rizzo is being held in the county jail on $50,000 bail.

It couldn't be determined if he has a lawyer who could comment on the charge.
