A man was shoved headfirst into a Greenwich Village restaurant window in what police are investigating as a hate crime.

Police say a man yelled racist and anti-gay slurs at another man, then shoved his head against the window of the restaurant on West Fourth Street, between Jones and Cornelia streets, at about 5:30 p.m. Sunday. The window did not break but the man was seriously hurt.

It's not clear what, if anything, led up to the attack.

The reaction in the community has been swift, and city leaders were handing out fliers with the suspect's face on them Thursday night. They're hoping to reassure the community and help catch the attacker.

State Sen. Brad Hoylman added, "In Greenwich Village, the most tolerant neighborhood in the world, we're going to stand up for our neighbors and make sure the perpetrator is caught."

"We have to send a message loud and clear that this is unacceptable in our neighborhood," said Councilwoman Margaret Chin.

"I've been in the Village for a long time and I'm just really shocked," said a resident named Dierdre.
