Man Found Wounded in Washington Square Park Shot Himself: Sources

A 38-year-old man found shot in the leg in Washington Square Park early Friday pulled the trigger himself, police sources tell NBC 4 New York.

The man was found wounded in the park around 5:30 a.m.

Detectives converged on the southwest corner of the park to investigate the shooting. The park and nearby sidewalks were closed for hours, cordoned off by yellow crime scene tape as authorities scoured the scene for evidence.

A police source says the gun believed to have been used in the shooting was discovered in a plastic bag underneath a car outside the west side entrance of the park.

The man was taken to a hospital in stable condition. The investigation is ongoing.
