A man was shot in the torso during an altercation outside a bar in Patchogue at about 2 a.m. Thursday, police say.

The 30-year-old man, identified as Maurice James of Central Islip, was involved in a dispute with several other people outside Attitudes Bar and Grill on Waverly Avenue when he was shot, police said.

James was transported in a private vehicle to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center, where he underwent emergency surgery. He's listed in critical condition, police said.

Detectives are continuing to investigate. Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call the Fifth Squad at 631-854-8552 or Crime Stoppers at 800-220-TIPS.
