Man Rescued From Icy Lake After Attempting to Retrieve His Dog

A man attempting to retrieve his dog broke through a frozen lake on Long Island Saturday and had to be rescued from the frigid water, police said.

The 56-year-old man, a Brooklyn resident whose name wasn't disclosed by Suffolk County police, was walking his dogs at Blydenburgh County Park in Smithtown at about 11:50 a.m. when Dena, one of his dogs, ran onto the frozen lake.

The man walked onto the ice, broke through, and spent about 25 minutes in chest-high water, police said.

Officers managed to get a tether to the man and pull him to safety. His dog was able to walk off the ice.

The man was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment of hypothermia.
