The man jumped down to help the woman retrieve her jacket, witnesses told police.

A man was killed and a woman was injured after they were hit by a train in Queens last night.

Police said the woman was at the station at 36th Avenue and 31st Street around 10:40 p.m. Friday when she dropped her jacket onto the tracks.

She jumped down to retrieve it, and police said the man, identified as 29-year-old Jose Gomez of Brooklyn, followed to help her. They were hit by a northbound N train.

They were taken to Elmhurst General Hospital, where Gomez was pronounced dead. Police said the woman was in critical but stable condition.

The identity of the female victim wasn't immediately known.

The investigation is ongoing.
