An out-of-work man stabbed his live-in girlfriend and their two children before killing himself at their Staten Island home Sunday night, police said.
The mother, Victoria Orlik, 34, and children were in serious condition Monday at Staten Island University Hospital after undergoing surgery on their neck wounds. The boyfriend, Douglas Nemeth, died en route after the incident around 7:30 p.m. Sunday.
Police responding to the emergency call found Orlik and her 18-month-old son Brandon outside on the lawn with their necks cut.
The father and their 3-year-old daughter, identified by neighbors as Sasha, were barricaded inside.
Officers stormed the three-story town house, breaking down the front door after they were unable to make contact with Nemeth in a standoff that lasted about 90 minutes. Residents of the sleepy neighborhood watched the commotion outside. The girl was found in a front bedroom and the man in the kitchen, both covered in blood.
Neighbors say the couple seemed happy, and that Nemeth stayed home with the children. It's unclear if he had a mental health history.
"She (is) a very sweet lady. I never expected for this to happen,'' family friend Konstantin Mitkin told the Staten Island Advance.
Mitkin said Nemeth had been jobless for at least two years; Orlik, a teacher, was the breadwinner.
"My mom told me he had a temper problem,'' Mitkin told the newspaper.
