Man Tries to Steal Food, Threatens Store Security Guard With Mini Meat Cleaver: Cops

A man who allegedly tried to steal food from a Long Island grocery store attempted to strike a security guard with a mini meat cleaver when the guard tried to stop him on Tuesday, police said.

Michael Everett, 55, tried to take the items from the Compare Foods on Merrick Road in Freeport around 9:30 p.m., according to the Nassau County Police Department.

A 46-year-old security guard noticed Everett was trying to leave the store without paying, so he confronted him. Everett then allegedly took a mini meat cleaver from the waistband of his pants and tried to strike the guard.

The two got into a short scuffle before other security staff intervened and restrained the suspect.

Everett was charged with first-degree robbery. He is scheduled to appear in court Wednesday. It was not immediately clear if he had an attorney.
