Police are searching for a man who allegedly followed a woman into her Harlem building and tried to rape her in her apartment.

The man was able to get into the apartment building by following the 31-year-old woman through the door, police say. He lingered in the hallway as she checked her mail, and when she began to walk up to her apartment, he approached her, going through her pockets and taking her cellphone.

The woman grabbed her cellphone back, and the suspect backed off, according to police. But when she proceeded to her apartment and opened her door, the suspect ran in behind her and tried to take off her clothes.

The woman fought back and yelled, police said. The suspect ran out of the apartment with the woman's cellphone.

The suspect was last seen wearing a beige coat with a black hooded sweatshirt underneath. Anyone with information is asked to contact Crime Stoppers at 800-577-TIPS.
