NYPD Officers Rescue Fallen Man From Subway Tracks as Train Approaches: Police

Police officers quickly rescued a man who fell to the subway tracks at Times Square as a train was approaching Wednesday evening, the NYPD says.

It's not clear what caused the 55-year-old man to fall to the tracks of the 2/3 express subway lines at about 7 p.m. Witnesses yelled out for help and got the attention of three officers who had just finished bag checks by the platform, police said.

Officer Richard Aponte rushed to the front of the subway platform to shine his flashlight toward an approaching train to signal it to stop, according to police.

Lieutenant William Moore, meanwhile, reached down to the tracks to pull up the man as officer Anthony Tufano held onto Moore's jacket to secure him to the platform.

The officers were able to pull up the man from the tracks, police said.

As they checked out the man and asked if he experienced a medical episode, the man said he had no idea what happened, according to police.

He declined medical attention at the scene and left the station, police said.

Moore, Tufano and Aponte are assigned to Transit District 1 and were just about to return to command when the man fell, according to police.
