Arrested Suspect Steals Unmarked Cop Car, Drives Off: Police

A suspect being cuffed on Long Island early on Friday managed to drive off in an unmarked police car, authorities said.

The suspect had been arrested on drug charges at Washington and Tell avenues in Deer Park and had been put into the back of an unmarked car at about 12:30 a.m. on Friday, according to the Suffolk County Police Department.

The suspect was able to wriggle his way into the driver's seat somehow and drove off. Authorities said that he drove the stolen cruiser a couple of blocks before abandoning it and running off. A loaded handgun in the cruiser was not taken.

The suspect, who police said had gang affiliations, was still on the run Friday evening.

Residents living in the area reported seeing heavy police presence in the area after the unusual car theft.

"It was something out of a movie show, really," said one resident.

Police haven't revealed the identity of the suspect.
