Car Knocks Man to Ground Before Another Vehicle Runs Him Over and Kills Him: Police

Police are looking for a livery cab driver who drove away after knocking a man to the ground before a second car ran him over and killed him, cops say.

The pedestrian, Gabriel Garcia, 28, of the Bronx, died Monday night after he was hit by the cars, one that didn't stop, police said.

Police said Garcia was in the crosswalk when he was hit just before 10:30 p.m. at East 138th Street and Walton Avenue in Mott Haven.

The first vehicle, a dark colored sedan with TLC license plates, was traveling in the eastbound left lane of East 138th Street when it knocked Garcia to the ground, police said. The second car, a 2017 Toyota Camry, was driving directly behind the first car then ran Garcia over.

Authorities responded and found Garcia suffering from injuries to the body and head, police said. He was taken to Lincoln Hospital, where he died just before 11 p.m., officials said.

Both cars stopped briefly before they both fled the scene, authorities said. The second car returned a short time later and spoke with officers. That driver has not been charged, however, there is still no sign of the livery cab driver.

The investigation is ongoing.
