Man Arrested in Connection With Shooting of Brooklyn Toddler

The 3-year-old boy was shot early Saturday morning in Flatbush

A 22-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a shooting that left a 3-year-old Brooklyn boy in critical condition, police said.

The toddler, a babysitter and a man were inside a second-floor apartment at 520 E. 21st St. in Flatbush when shots rang out early Saturday morning, authorities said.

Officials said the boy was hit on the left side of his head.

Police said Bernard Akeem, who lives in the same building as the child, was charged Sunday with assault, criminal possession of a weapon, endangering the welfare of a child and tampering with evidence.

Neighbors said the boy's name is Terell and described him as a sweet child.

"He's a nice little boy, my god, how he get shot?" wondered Jocelyn Harris.

The boy, who was initially listed in serious condition at Kings County Hospital, is now in stable condition.

Neighborhood residents said they were shocked and saddened that such a young child was injured by a gunshot.

"A 3-year-old should not be worried about getting shot," said James Nicholas, who lives nearby. "A 3-year-old should be running around chasing little kids like them."
